Gapminder Screencast Analysis

The two variables in video one are literacy rate, youth total, measured in (% of people ages 15-24) and Children out of school, primary, measured in (millions). The two variables in video two were both economic sectors. Service measured in (% GDP) and Industry measured in (% GDP).
Generally a country with a higher literacy rate will have a higher economic rate. This is because educated workers will be able to obtain skilled jobs that produce more money. The same general idea goes for children staying in school.  The economic sectors are closely tied to economic development. A country with a high percentage of jobs in the service sector is more developed than a country with a high percentage in the industry sector.
There are many patterns shown with the variables in video one. A country with a higher literacy rate and more children in school will be located in a country with more capita, creating more skilled jobs. One regional pattern is that urban citizens and children will have a higher literacy rate than rural living people. One global development pattern for economic sectors is that a country with a high percentage of labor for in the service sector is more developed and is usually located in the core countries. On the regional scale a country with a high percentage of labor force in the industry sector will have regional capita disparities.
The reasoning for the first pattern; literacy rate and children attending school, is attached to amount of capita.  This goes all the way back to geographic luck. If the country had geographic luck and could  produce a surplus amount of food, allowing people to specialize in jobs and earn money, that country would be wealthier than those without geographic luck. Generally citizens living rural are in the agricultural labor force not making a whole lot of money. Those in the cities with access to industrial jobs will be making more money and will be able to send their children to school. The country with a high percentage in the service sector is usually located in the core or semi-periphery. This is because service jobs require more education and physically must be located in areas with enough capita to provide these jobs. On a regional scale, the industry sector will have a larger regional capita disparity. For example, in the 'China is Rising' video, there will be people who own the manufacturing factories making millions of dollars and there will be people working inside the factories barely making enough to survive.

Crossing the Lines GIS Activity

The State I believed was going to separate was Cameroon.  Cameroon is  located in Africa between Niger and The Central African Republic. This state would separate into two different countries; Cameroon and South Cameroons. The boundary would be draw in such a way as to separate  the English speaking region from the former French territory. The states I believed would unify were Iran, Iraq, Syria, and Turkey. Located in the Midwest parts of these states would unify to create Kurdistan.  The kurds are a stateless nation so the boundaries would be drawn in such a way to create a nation-state. Kurdistan would include parts of the northwestern Iran, northern Iraq, northeastern Syria and southeastern Turkey.
I believe that Cameroon will split up for multiple centrifugal forces. One centrifugal force is language differences. The separatists in the Northwest and Southwest region speak English and the rest of Cameroon is French speaking. The other centrifugal force is that the country does not have a long history of being a state.  Southern Cameroons became apart of Cameroon October 1, 1946. When Cameroon was fist colonized by the french  Cameroon and Southern Cameroons were governed separately. It was not until 1946 that they were recognized as one state. The English speaking  Southern Cameroons is trying to seek succession from Cameroon because they feel that they are not being treated fairly. I have reason to believe that the Stateless nation of the Kurds will eventually unify. One region is similarity among cultural groups.  The Kurds are a cultural group and share similar beliefs and customs. The new State of Kurdistan is already on their way to becoming a sovereign state. The Iraqi Kurdistan was the first to gain autonomous in. Iran has has named a province Kurdistan although it is not self-ruled. The desire for a nation-stated in Syria has become violent. They accomplished as much as establishing their own government. I believe that the state of Kurdistan is in the near future.
The Kurdistan has a cultural boundary. I looked at a map of nations for the midwest and made boundaries surrounding the largest concentration of kurds in each state. There wasn't a layer on Esri that would help show the boundary that was draw but it was based off of research found on Wikipedia. The boundary of cameroon and Southern Cameroons is also a cultural boundary. The layer on the map shows different ethnic groups in africa that was helpful but was not the overall decision of where I decided to place the boundary. I created the boundary based on language. I decided to base it off of language because Southern Cameroons is mad up of English speakers. There was not a layer to show this on Esri but I did some research and created the boundary based off of pictures and information  that I found. Mostly that Southern Cameroons was in the northwest and southwest of Cameroon.
After Southern Cameroons Splits from Cameroon I think the devolutionary forces will strengthen because the rest of the country has multiple centripetal forces. The new boundary will solve the economic disputes between the English speaking and French speakers. The English speakers will no longer feel like they don't get enough representation. Cameroon will become more economically and culturally unified. They no longer have to fight political debates with the Anglophones.  I feel like the devolutionary forces in kurdistan will strengthen but the rest of Iraq, Iran, Turkey, and Syria will weaken. I think that devolutionary forces will strengthen in kurdistan because they will have common interest for religion and economic values. I believe that the other four states will weaken because they don't want to give up anymore land. They are going to try to keep the rest of the nations within their states at bay.

Ap Photo Collage

This cultural trait in non-material, it is a certain belief to a culture. The symbolism of red in our culture is love and romance but in other cultures this is not the case.
In India red symbolizes wealth.  Red is also the color of the talik on the foreheads of men and women. For women the red talik symbolizes marriage which is why most brides in India will wear red wedding dresses.  For men the talik is meant to bring good luck from day-to-day.
Red symbolizes life in Japan. Colors have symbolic associations that appear in Japanese art, dress and rituals, and many have maintained those meanings even as Japanese society rapidly changes. Japanese color symbolism helps others identify the emotional state or desires of those wearing particular colors. In japan they would obtain the red dye from the Safflower and make lipstick and paint out of it. Red also symbolizes the sun. Most children in Japan will grow up drawing the sun not yellow but red. Japan's flag means land of the rising sun which is why there is a red circle in the middle of the flag.
In South Africa Red will symbolize grief or a time of mourning.  In the South African flag red symbolizes the British colonialism. On the Pan-African Red symbolizes the blood that unites African Americans.

Census Data Mapper Map Analysis October-2013

Link to this map on Google Drive

I have created a map that shows the percent of females in every county in the United States. As I analyzed the map I noticed that that there was a high percentage of women in southeastern United States and up the east coast. The highest percentage of women in one given county is 56.8% . One could conclude that women and men are almost equally distributed throughout most of these counties. In some cases men dominate leaving women at a startling 27.9%. This occurrence takes place mostly in the western region of the United States, including California, Nevada, Washington, and Idaho.
More women are living in the southeastern region of the United states. A reason for this could be that women outlive men and most retired citizens move to that area because of the climate. The east coast has a higher overall percentage of women than the west. This might be due to more job opportunities, and denser populations.
With more women living in the eastern half of the United States might cause an additional increase in population, assuming those women would reproduce. Women don’t have a very high percentage for political statistics but with time and growth in overall percentage of women, one could assume that women may hold more political offices than in the west. With the population growth in elderly adults that will come from the next generation one could predict the building of nursing homes and retirement facilities, especially seen as women outlive men.
